31 agosto Blog Follies30 agosto DNC stands for Doing Nothing but Celebrating !The following is a little funny from a very Independant lady, and not necessarily the views of
those of MSN live spaces, MSN, Hotmail or even Bill Gates...in that order !
Well, I'm sure you've all heard by now that the Democratic National Convention has been in full swing here in Denver. Yes, we all had a great time... but then... we always do but just not with so many kooks hanging around. Yes I'm talking about our cops ! Yesterday they handcuffed and curbed an eighty year old man who was just trying to get a armload of library books home in one piece. He's a little upset right now....
I've received a couple of e-mails telling about all the riot atrocities and I'm right here where all the so-called action is going on! On the whole, it's been very peaceful. You'd hardly know there was a convention going on at all, and that's the truth.
Now, if we could just get Obama to tell us the truth- such as, who gave him the middle name Hussein? Boy, that was sheer brilliance wasn't it? If I vote for him I'll never hear the end of it.
He sure cuts a fine figure doesn't he.... but then so does McCain ~ check it out! They're models now!
Now McCain policies are just plain scary. If I didn't know better you'd think that Unions were nothing less than the Mafia itself. Trust me folks, no one has ever been strong-armed into joining the union! These guys broke rich guys heads (and got their own busted in the process ! ) so that "we-the-people" can get fair wages. Don't let 'em lie to you. Unions are the best thing that ever happened to this country right along with social security. Social security wasn't meant to be a million dollar trust fund- it's a cushion for economic times like this,- just remember who put us in this economic mess.
isn't that something ? ? ?
Even when he tries Obama just can't seem to get specific. Would someone mind telling me what exactly he's going to change besides the subject when you ask him? Who's on first... AGAIN ! ! Argh! I wish he'd stood up for Hillary when they were trying to laugh her off the podium. It makes me want to slam dunk him just like somebody else...
Well, that about wraps this up! I'm tired of talking about it and I think I'll just take myself a little siesta.
The Castle Lady keeps it light and breezy..
28 agosto Sonnet on ChillonBy Lord G.G. Byron
Eternal spirit of the chainless Mind !
Brightest in dungeons, Liberty ! thou art;
For there thy habitation is the heart-
The heart which love of thee alone can bind;
And when thy sons to fetters are consigned-
To fetters, and the damp vault's dayless gloom,
Their country conquers with their martyrdom,
Chillon ! thy prison is a holy place,
And thy sad floor an altar- for 't was trod,
Until his very steps have left a trace
Worn, as if thy cold pavement were a sod,
By Bonivard !- May none those marks efface!
For they appeal from tyranny to God.
June 1816
Francois de Bonivard, 1496-1570, fought against the Duke of Savoy for the freedom of Geneva. He was imprisoned in Chillon from 1530 to 1536, being released when Geneva became republican. During the rest of his life he worked to make Geneva an educational center. He is said to have done much towards founding the public library and the university. Byron's poems, while having some basis in fact, mostly sprung from his own imagination.
The Castle Lady with affectionate appeal ! 26 agosto Chateau de Chillon in Switzerland Just off the banks of Lake Geneva in Switzerland, Chateau de Chillon, a legendary castle made so by the poem written by Lord G.G. Byron, "The Prisoner of Chillon", sits in a fairytale setting surrounded by beautiful mountains and the imposing and dangerous Dents du Midi. If you visit the dungeon you will have a chance to see his name carved into one of the pillars ! The oldest parts of this castle have not been dated in certainty but records that exist indicate that it was started as early as 1005 and belonged to the bishops of Sion. At some point between that date and the latest in 1160 it was given in care of the d'Alinge family.
It consists of twenty-five different buildings which are interconnected due to the work of architect Pierre Mainier for Peter II (Pietro II) of Savoy mid-13th century. The Tower of Alinge (also known as the Bergfried, meaning central watch tower ) was fortified by him with the use of towers placed only on the land side. This was a very important trade route and the castle's function, besides being a residence to the Duke of Savoy was controlling water traffic on the Lake ( also know as Lac Le'man ) situated near Montreux in the Vaudois canton of Switzerland.
Chillon contains a remarkably well kept series of wall paintings and carved interiors which date from the medieval period along with historical objects and furnishings, so an inside tour is de rigueur. It is still considered the residence of the House of Savoy with the most notable inhabitant being the aforementioned prisoner, Francois Bonnivard, who was a hero of the Swiss reformation and a Genevois monk imprisoned from 1530 to 1536. Henry James also used this castle as one of the settings in his novel Daisy Miller. It has never been taken in a siege but was surrendered through the centuries and changed hands many times through treaties.
Below are three unconnected stanzas of Lord Byron's famous poem. Tomorrow I'm adding his "Sonnet on Chillon" in a separate entry! Check out my new Swiss Castles photo album !
The Prisoner of Chillon
2
There are seven pillars of Gothic mould
In Chillon's dungeons deep and old,
There are seven columns, massy* and gray, *mossy
Dim with a dull imprisoned ray,
A sunbeam which hath lost its way,
And through the crevice and the cleft
Of the thick wall is fallen and left;
Creeping o'er the floor so damp,
Like a marsh's meteor lamp:
And in each pillar there is a ring
And in each ring there is a chain;
That iron is a cankering thing,
For in these limbs its teeth remain,
With marks that will not wear away,
Till I have done with this new day,
Which now is painful to these eyes,
Which have not seen the sun so rise
For years- I cannot count them o'er,
I lost their long and heavy score
When my last brother heavy score
When my last brother drooped and died,
And I lay living by his side.
6
Lake Leman lies by Chillon's walls:
A thousand feet in depth below
Its massy waters meet and flow;
Thus much the fathom-line was sent
From Chillon's snow-white battlement
Which round about the wave
Have made- and like a living grave,
Below the surface of the lake
The dark vault lies wherein we lay:
We heard it ripple night and day:
Sounding o'er our heads it knocked;
And I have felt the winter's spray
Wash through the bars when winds were high
And wanton in the happy sky;
And then the very rock hath rocked,
And I have felt it shake, unshocked,
Because I could have smiled to see
The death that would have set me free.
12
I made a footing in the wall,
It was not therefrom to escape,
For I had buried one and all,
Who loved me in a human shape:
And the whole earth would henceforth be
A wider prison unto me:
No child-no sire- no kin had I,
No partner in my misery;
I thought of this, and I was glad,
For thought of them had made me mad;
But I was curious to ascend
To my barred windows, and to bend
Once more, upon the mountains high,
The quiet of a loving eye.
23 agosto Nuggets Without Camby ? ? As a rule I don't usually discuss politics of professional sports teams and one of the reasons why is because I believe it can really spoil a person's enjoyment of the game- whatever it may be. This time I felt so strongly about the wrong, personally, and not just based on what I've read that I decided I should step out and open my mouth for once.
I'm really upset about the way the Nuggets owner dealt with Marcus Camby recently. Camby's agent and Camby himself feel the same way and I can't say I blame them for it. The reasons for the inexplicable trade to the Clippers and the way it was done were insensitive and perhaps even deceptive.
When Nuggets officials were questioned for a reason why by Mr Kaplan (Camby's agent), they said it was a salary dump which sounds bad enough but this particular maneuver may be one of the most unequal trades in NBA history and that's putting it mildly. Also, if this is one of the most compelling reasons for the trade you have to look at what Boeheim ( Syracuse U.'s coach and assistant to Head Coach, Krzyzewski, for the U.S. men's Olympic basketball team ) said recently,
"I guess Wal-Mart's stock is down a little bit or something. Must be down a couple hundred million dollars. I don't know. I didn't know money was a problem in that family."
This was referring to the fact that Kroenke's wife is an heir to the Wal-Mart fortune. (She was ranked No 165 on Forbe's list of the 400 richest Americans last year.)
"I don't know how you can let Marcus Camby go. He was like the heart and soul of that team, when it comes to defense, protecting the basket and rebounding. It's tough to replace him."
Just in case you need to be brought up to speed on the worth of Marcus Camby (to any team in the NBA) I would tell you that his stats alone are impressive and also the reason why his salary has been driven up so high. This should be an asset, not a default. By dumping a player who received the 2006-2007 award as NBA Defensive Player of the Year ( he averaged 9.1 points, 13.1 rebounds and an NBA-high 3.61 blocked shots in 2007 !) for a team who has been described thus:
"They're a great offensive team, but in the NBA, in the West particularly, you've got to stop people (from scoring)" says Boeheim.
This is key, as Boeheim knows especially for The Nuggets whose greatest weakness is the defense and Camby along with Najera was making a huge difference in blocked shots and the amount of rebounds alone with Camby leading the way.
The worst aspect of this whole deal is how it was handled. In Camby's own words:
"I understand that this is definitely a business, but I felt that the six years of service that I put in on the court and off the court, they at least could have given me a heads-up on what was going on. I feel very disrespected on that aspect."
The story on that is that he was actually traded on Tuesday night, the 15th of July, and only a day earlier, Camby was at the NBA summer league in Las Vegas. Not a single official there said a word about a potential deal. Blind-siding a player like that is inexcusable and hardly business-like. ( My opinion, but I feel it's valid.)
The trade came off only a few days after backup forward Eduardo Najera- as a new free-agent- agreed to terms with the contract handed to him by the New Jersey Nets. It is almost crazy that the Nuggets organization continually talked back and forth about needing to play solid defense and started to make some headway with these two players but traded away their best defenders.
Camby said,"From that aspect, I really don't understand the move. They obviously feel confident with the team they have assembled right now to get some things done."
When all is said and done I feel that whatever the organization thinks that it gained through a tax break and the clout of a trade exception (which is supposed to give them more leverage when they finally make a deal for what they gave up in trading Camby), they are going to pay for this dearly in the coming season when they see how Camby's absence will deeply affect the Nuggets games.

8/24/08 : I made my 18,000th hit at 3:20 p.m. today! Thanks to everybody who comes to read, listen and look ! 20 agosto La FranceIf you have been wondering what the lyrics are to the song I have put on the Windows Media Player on this Live Space you won't have to wonder any longer. I have enjoyed Michel Sardou's music for many years as he is one I supremely admire for his passion and fire as much as the actual music. You'd be hard pressed to find someone who can sing like him today. I decided to go ahead and put up the actual lyrics en francais and the translation for my English readers. Enjoy.
When I think of old England one recalls the Queen Mary
beached so long on the cliffs of the pier in California.
When I think of the old English I fancy shipwrecked derelicts
anchored carriers who searched for a dream and never
returned to their home.
*Never again call me "France".
France left me to sink.
Never again call me "France".
This is my last will and testament.
I was a magnificent boat capable of lasting thousands of years.
I was a giant. I was nearly, almost stronger than the ocean itself.
I was a massive boat. I carried thousands of lovers.
I was France. What remains of it ?
A dead body for the seagulls. *
When I think of Old England I think about the Queen Mary
I would not like to end up like her on the pier of California.
More grand than a warship with the courage to sink me
I was turned over at Saint-Nazaire in Brittany where I was born. *

17 agosto In the palm of my hand...16 agosto Confidence and Responsibility07 agosto Is it OK to get angry with God ? My subject title is part of one quote which got my attention because it seemed to be stuck in a grey area which didn't make sense. The entire quote is this:
"It's okay to get angry with God. He can take it."
Perhaps it's because I often have a difficult time with separating anger from hatred that it took awhile for me to get my head wrapped around that idea as acceptable Christian behavior. After all, one is a strong emotion while the other is a taboo attitude. A Christian must not harbor hatred. It's obvious to everyone that anger can get out of hand and appear to be hatred. In Ephesians 4:26 & 27 it states "Be ye angry, and sin not: let not the sun go down upon your wrath: Neither give place to the devil." As you read further to the end of the chapter it reveals how the true nature of anger can be distorted if repressed and used for evil if this emotion is allowed to be carried by the wrong spirit and given over to lies.
If you examine verse 26B you'll see that anger hidden and couched is the worst kind of dishonesty. It's unhealthy, to say the least and separates you from people and God, over time. The most extreme form of anger is when Christians somehow turn away from God, and become uncommunicative with Him to the point of denying Him altogether. Matthew Henry stated, "Secret disaffection to God is often disguised with the color of respect to Him." It's not possible to fool God with false respect, however, people are a different matter!
My conclusion on this question forms a very important and broader question everyone should ask themselves from time to time:
"What is my relationship really like with my creator ? Do I open up to God or do I play games when life seems unfair or just doesn't go according to my plan ?"
An honest relationship with God will occasionally bring forth issues which might make you angry. The question is not whether He can take it ; doesn't it stand to reason that it's better to ask yourself, "Can our relationship ( yours and Gods ) take this emotion ?" You see even the relationship between yourself and your savior can become abusive and He doesn't dole out abuse. Do you? People often carry out all their relationships in an abusive manner because of their upbringing as a child. It's very easy for them to fall into the same patterns that they have carried out most of their lives. Obviously this can become a very thorny issue.
Perhaps this is why Jesus referred to God as being His Father. If you cannot get angry and express this emotion toward a parent (who may or may not continue to love you unconditionally), then how will you be able to deal with this same emotion to the parent who is not "visually" present? God has placed no conditions on us because of His Son, but do we place conditions on Him?
It's best to treat our relationship with God as if we were trying to keep a love relationship in order because as a matter of fact it is a love relationship. Anger may have it's place in an association with anyone but it's best that there is a true rapport first and an unconditional love. Unconditional love is irrevocable and eternal. It is also essential or it just doesn't work.
As always, The Castle Lady supplies a plenary session of hugs and kisses !

06 agosto Raleigh's Battle Cry :A Farewell To False Love
Farewell to false love, the oracle of lies.
A mortal foe and enemy to rest;
An envious boy, from whom all cares arise.
A bastard vile, a beast with rage possessed;
A way of error, a temple full of treason,
In all effects, contrary unto reason
A poisoned serpent covered all with flowers,
Mother of sighs, and murderer of repose,
A sea of sorrows from whence are drawn such showers
As moisture lend to every grief that grows.
A school of guile, a net of deep deceit.
A gilded hook, that holds a poisoned bait.
A fortress foiled, which reason did defend,
A Siren song, a fever of the mind,
A maze wherein affection finds no end.
A ranging cloud that runs before the wind.
A substance like the shadow of the sun,
A goal of grief for which the wisest run,
A quenchless fire, a nurse of trembling fear,
A path that leads to peril and mishap,
A true retreat of sorrow and despair,
An idle boy that sleeps in pleasure's lap.
A deep mistrust of that which certain seems,
A hope of that which reason doubtful deems.
Sith then thy trains my younger years betrayed
And for my faith ingratitude I find.
And sith repentance hath my wrongs bewrayed,
Whose course was ever contrary to kind.
False Love: Desire: and Beauty frail adieu
Dead is the root whence all these fancies grew.
Sir Walter Raleigh
04 agosto The Mirror of the SeaLove, though in a sense it may be admitted to be
stronger than death, is by no means so universal and so sure,
in fact, love is rare-
the love of men, of things, of ideas,
the love of perfected skill.
For love is the enemy of haste;
it takes count of passing days, of men who pass away,
of a fine art matured slowly in the course of years
and doomed in a short time to pass away too, and be no more.
Love and regret
go hand in hand in this world of changes
swifter than the shifting of the clouds
reflected in the mirror of the sea.
